“Niche down" is the advice everyone gives, and it sounds sensible right up until you try to do it. Choosing one thing means closing the door on several others, and most marketers got good at a lot of things because the job demanded it, not because they couldn't commit.

So which one actually builds a career? In this Marketing Career Clinic, Olivia is joined by three marketers who've answered that question in completely different ways: Rachel Randall, who works across strategy, brand and go-to-market for B2B clients, and Judith Rafferty and Margaret Ward, who've both built businesses around a single specialism.

We'll get into what each path actually costs, how reversible the decision is, and what's changing now that AI is doing a passable version of a lot of tactical work.

Meet the panel:

Rachel Randall is co-managing partner at Coussins Associates, a marketing consultancy that acts as an outsourced marketing team for B2B organisations across the UK, Europe and beyond. Her clients include private-equity backed groups, global manufacturers, and international healthcare and distribution businesses. Rachel works at the point where strategy meets reality, defining direction and strengthening positioning while making sure good ideas actually get executed well. She leads client relationships across strategy, brand, communications and go-to-market, and spends much of her time as a sounding board to senior stakeholders while staying close to the detail with delivery teams.

Judith Rafferty is a copywriter who helps businesses replace tired, tangled copy with words that do a commercial job. She's spent 30+ years in sales and marketing across hospitality, venues, restaurants and events, working in-house, agency side and alongside senior teams. That frontline sales background is where her specialism came from, and it shows in the work: website copy, email sequences, blogs and LinkedIn content built to convert rather than just read nicely. She's a good person to ask what it takes to build a reputation for one thing and stay known for it.

Margaret Ward is founder and email strategist behind cc'd consultancy, an email marketing agency that helps e-commerce brands turn their email list into their most valuable asset. She and her team have worked with fashion, wellness, homeware and gifting brands, designing high-converting emails that still feel human. Margaret also co-runs email marketing and CRM meet-ups across the UK, creating spaces for the industry to connect and learn from each other. GiM members may recognise her from her session on whether email marketing is boring, or whether we're just doing it wrong

We’ll cover:

  • Where the pressure to specialise actually comes from, and whether "generalist" has quietly become a dirty word in marketing

  • What specialising closes off, not just what it opens up

  • How to tell the difference between a specialism worth committing to and something you're simply good at right now

  • Whether AI makes breadth more valuable or less, and where the safe ground is now

  • How to position yourself on a CV or a profile when your real strength is doing a bit of everything well

This is a career clinic, so the last 15 minutes are yours. Bring the dilemma you're actually stuck on.

You'll leave with a much clearer sense of which path fits where you are right now, and the reassurance that whichever you pick, it isn't permanent.
