Is digital marketing a good career?

Digital marketing is an evergrowing industry with a million opportunities. No day is ever the same, which is a reason why we’re so passionate about it. But, is digital marketing a good career? We have lots to say about this, as the marketing world is constantly changing. So, let’s spill the digital marketing tea.

What is a career in digital marketing?

Digital marketing is similar to traditional marketing, except it’s all done online. This includes advertising and selling a product or service across digital marketing channels that can be accessed on a phone, laptop or another piece of technology. For example:

  • Content marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Email marketing
  • Paid media marketing
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO)
  • Affiliate marketing

As well as having plenty of channels to produce content for, a career in digital marketing includes a variety of roles. You can be a Founder or CEO of a business, a Social Media Assistant, or any position that falls under the marketing umbrella. Over time, you’ll build up skills and work within different areas of marketing. This usually happens naturally, as there’s so much to learn within the industry. You can read about more roles and digital marketing opportunities within the rest of our blogs too.

Do marketing careers begin with a degree?

You might be surprised, but you don’t need to have a marketing degree to pursue a career in the industry. Even though there’s plenty to learn about marketing channels, you can gain this knowledge through various courses and online resources. This makes it a realistic dream for any aspiring marketer who becomes passionate later on in life. Here are some of our favourite recommendations for marketing courses (which are free, by the way)!

Despite not needing to have a marketing degree, studying it in-depth will give you incredible insight into the industry. You’ll gain knowledge from lecturers and professors with marketing expertise, as well as being surrounded by peers with the same interests. If you have a marketing degree, it’s more than likely that you’ll be considered before others when applying for a marketing role.

Is digital marketing a good career for those who need flexibility?

Absolutely!

If you’re a remote freelance digital marketer, you’ll have the freedom to work from pretty much any location. You decide your hours, the projects you take on and who you work for. This counts as self-employment, so you’ll be responsible for taxes and additional payments. It’s a small price to pay for freedom, though. Take your laptop across the globe and work from wherever your heart desires.

On the other hand, you can work as a digital marketing employee for a specific company. This can be done part-time or full-time, which should be stated when you apply for a job role. Whatever your needs are, there will be a position out there that’s right for you.

No matter whether you want to work a 9-5 in an office or be a travelling marketer, the industry gives you plenty of options to create a flexible dream career. Working on your own terms is a huge priority nowadays and is actively encouraged with working from home too. Luckily, digital marketing is accessible from all over the world.

There’s a constant demand for digital marketing

No matter your experience in marketing, you’ll be no stranger to the fact that it’s all around us. From Instagram ads to Influencer Marketing, as consumers, we jump at the chance to be persuaded by a brand. Can you imagine the number of marketers that create the content you see on your phone every day?

This is why companies constantly need assistance with marketing. The likelihood in modern society is that if you don’t have a strong online presence as a business, you’re falling behind on potential sales and growth. As we stated earlier, there are so many marketing job opportunities, meaning you can work in a range of areas. Marketing careers are always relevant, so you won’t ever need to worry about being on a path that won’t take you anywhere.

Unleash your creativity

As a digital marketer, you’re given a lot of creative freedom that you wouldn’t necessarily have in other careers. Creating campaigns, copywriting, social media posts and recording podcasts are examples of amazing ways to unleash your creativity whilst working hard towards business goals.

A prime example of creativity within marketing that went viral is Weetabix’s recent Twitter campaign involving Heinz beans. Social media users went into utter hysterics over a picture of Heinz beans poured over Weetabix cereal, with both brands gaining serious attention. Other mega-companies such as Virgin Atlantic, NHS, and Nando’s surged to Twitter to reply with witty remarks. Every brand involved had a moment in the spotlight, with the original tweet being a brilliantly comedic way of advertising Weetabix and Heinz.

Trends in marketing come and go faster than you can blink. That is why digital marketing is a good career because no day is ever the same. Ways to grow and can traffic to your business are always changing. This may seem intimidating, but it isn’t the case at all. As long as you have the foundation knowledge of marketing, you’ll upskill your strengths and work on your weaknesses along the way.

You get to be a part of the marketing community

If you love connecting with others, digital marketing is definitely the right choice for you. The element of community is something that sets marketing aside from other career choices, as people are always willing to share their knowledge. It’s similar to the way we repurpose content, marketers love to share experience and skills with others. This is usually known as networking, which involves reaching out to others in your industry in hopes of connecting. This can be for collaboration purposes, or the enjoyment of being involved with like-minded people. Marketing is a very social industry, which we love!

Besides being keen networkers, you’ll know we’re all about empowering and inspiring others on their marketing journey.
